An exhibition of works by Latvian Jewish artists created in the pre-war period, in the 1920s and 1930s, has been opened in Rietumu Bank Gallery.
The event is organised by the Riga Jewish Community and the Museum “Jews in Latvia”.
The exposition acquaints one with the work of artists – painters and graphic artists – who made up a significant part of the artistic life of Latvia from 1920 to 1940.
The starting point for this exhibition was another pre-war exhibition of graphics, which featured works by Jewish artists from 60 countries. It was held in Riga and Liepaja in 1939, and for many of its participants this exhibition was the last.
Several works shown at the 1939 exhibition are also included in the current exposition.
Among the authors whose works can be seen this time in Rietumu Gallery are masters such as David Shkolnik (1878-1941), Mikhail Jo (1893-1960), Bernhard Dannenhirsch (1894-1972), Isaac Friedlander (1890-1968), Moses Parparov (1891-1941), Alexander Kopelovich (1915-1990) and Samuel Haskin (1909-1974).
The works of Jewish artists for the current exhibition have been provided by the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Museum “Jews in Latvia”, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, as well as private individuals.
The exhibition will soon move to Siauliai, Lithuania, where it will be held in the Aušros Museum.
The exhibition in Rietumu Gallery is open on weekdays until 31 July from 9.00 up to 18.00. As always, admission is free.
